First, start the vehicle, apply the service break, release the parking brake, hold the shift stock in the downshift position momentarily until L is displayed on the dash mode is most commonly used while driving to maximize engine braking and minimize the use of the brake pedal.
For example, when driving down long grades selecting low mode using the shift stock after cresting a grade can maximize engine braking and help maintain a desired speed.
The driver will need to push in on the end of the shift stock allowing the transmission to go back into D drive auto mode. When you're ready to stop, apply the service break, come to a complete stop, select neutral on the shifter and pull the parking brake.
